What To Do If Your Dishwasher Is Not Draining

4/30/2012

Is your dishwasher not draining completely? Although you first thought might be that the dishwasher needs to be repaired or replaced, the problem could actually be with the plumbing and not the machine. If the water from the dishwasher encounters a blockage on its way to the drain pipe, it will have nowhere to go but back into the dishwasher. So, if your dishwasher is not draining, rule out a stoppage by following these steps.
  1. Make sure the sink is draining. If your sink is not draining well the dishwasher will not drain either.

  2. Run the garbage disposer. In most cases the dishwasher is set up to drain through the garbage disposer. When there is food built up on the inside of the disposer there is less space for the dishwasher water to go. Run the disposer thoroughly with plenty of water to really clear out the debris inside of it.

  3. Clean the air gap. If water comes out of the air gap (and sometimes all over the counter) when you run the dishwasher, the blockage is between the air gap and the garbage disposer. To clear it, remove the air gap cap, locate the large tube that goes into the garbage disposer and remove it. Clear out any build up in the tube.

  4. Check the connection between the drain tube and garbage disposer. While the air gap tube is out you can check to see if the blockage is at the opening to the garbage disposer. Insert a screw driver into the small opening for the drain tube and move it around to make sure it is clear.

  5. Clear the drain tube. Disconnect the drain tube from the air gap and make sure it is not plugged. If there is any debris inside the tube, clear it out before reconnecting it.

If you have tried all of these fixes and the dishwasher is still not draining it could be that the pump is bad. If this is the case you can contact an appliance repair person to inspect it.

Tip for Preventing Future Drain Clogs

4/26/2012

One easy way to prevent drains from clogging is to introduce very hot water into the drain pipes on a regular basis. Dishwaters are a great example of this. Because dishwashers expel hot water from their wash cycle at high volume, they clear out gunk such as congealed grease and food before it has a chance to accumulate in any great quantity.

You can do the same thing with sinks and bathtubs. Simply fill the basin with the hottest possible water every couple of weeks, let the drain out, and then follow with about thirty seconds of hot water from the tap. This helps "blow out" the slime and junk that builds up and causes drain clogs. While not the best thing for your energy savings, it is a tried-and-true method for preventing future drain clogs.

PROBLEM: Water Leak Around Base of Heater

4/24/2012

Water Leak Around Base of HeaterPossible Causes

  • Faulty T&P (temperature and pressure) relief valve
  • T&P valve leak due to excessive pressure, overheating or stuck
  • Leak from overhead or nearby plumbing connection
  • Leaking water tank (corrosion likely)

    Possible Repairs

    • Place bucket under overflow pipe. Open and flush T&P valve clear of debris. If leak remains from valve, replace valve.
    • Reduce thermostat setting to prevent tank overheating and opening T&P relief valve.
    • Inspect bottom of tank by looking through combustion chamber. If water marks or heavy rusting is noticed or if water is noticed setting in combustion chamber bottom, then the water heater needs to be replaced.

Roots In Drain Lines Can Cause Stoppages

Roots growing into pipes in the ground is one thing, but roots growing up from under your house’s slab foundation and invading your toilet is another thing entirely. Believe it or not this problem is not as uncommon as you may think. If you live on a slab foundation it is possible for the roots to grow up from under the slab, into the bottom of the toilet, and then grow back down into the plumbing drain pipe. This will of course cause all kinds problems.

Drainage At The Clean-Out

4/15/2012

If you have a main line clean out you have an additional way of verifying a sewer drain clog. Locate the clean out if you don’t already know where it is. Open the clean out by either unscrewing or pulling to remove the cap. Check the clean out for any waste or water that may be backing up there. You should not be able to see the water coming up the clean out pipe. If water is flowing up and out of the clean out or standing in the pipe this confirms that you have a main line sewer stoppage.

Once you have verified a sewer drain clog you can move on to clearing it. Clearing a sewer drain requires a sewer drain snake. You can either call a professional plumber or rent the machine and clear it yourself. Either way a sewer drain clog should be cleared as quickly as possible.

Main line Stoppage

If you think there is a sewer stoppage, the first thing that you need to do is locate the cleanout, which is usually located in the flower bed near the front of the house. Check the cleanout to see if it is holding water. If it is not, then it is likely to be an internal problem. If it is holding water, then it might be a service line or main line stoppage. At that point you can contact an Affordable Plumber in Carlsbad California?

    Go Green!

The Grey Water Toilet System is a smart toilet system minimizes water wastage by allowing shower water to be utilized for flushing. When you shower drain water is collected and pumped into an in-wall tank, and when needed the toilet uses the in-wall tank of used shower water to clean the toilet. To avoid bacteria growth, the tank is discharged on a cyclic basis so that water isn’t stored for over twenty four hours. As an added safety precaution, the water is treated minimally via low powered ultrasonic irradiation.
